Our friend Rosi suggested we go to Bagnoregio when she heard we would be nearby.  The town sits on top of a tufo plug, a bit like Orvieto, but smaller.  The town was stranded when the rock ridge leading to it collapsed.  A man made pedestrian bridge has been built to take its place.  Because of its isolation the population has been decreasing and now there is only a handful of residents left.

The population grows a little each day as people go across the bridge to man the few shops and cafes.  The town is beautifully preserved and well worth the trudge to get to it.

Apparently it looks spectacular in the evening when it is lit up.  We were not able to stay long enough to experience this, but we enjoyed our short visit.
