Breakfast at Le Pain Quotidien, Paris

Le Pain Quotidien is a Belgian chain of restaurants. The first one I ever discovered was in Rue Archives in Paris. I have since eaten at these restaurants in New York, Los Angeles, London, Munich and Rome. I am currently staying quite close to Rue Archives, so I happily went to Le Pain Quotidien for breakfast, which, in my opinion, is what they do best.

You can sit at the communal table or a small one of your own.

Their range of bread and pastries is impressive.

I always have the boiled eggs with bread soldiers. There is plenty of bread left over, which is great, because Le Pain Quiotidien has the best chocolate spreads you will eat. If you order the eggs be sure not to gobble up all your bread straight away.

The thoughtful people at Le Pain Quotidien will also sell you some of their delicious spreads to take home.

I’m not usually one for chains, but this place is great. If anyone is listening, I want one in Brisbane.

  3. Your boiled egg with bread soldiers looks so good. If I am traveling to Paris via London and taking the Eurostar I love to stop to read the papers and have a cup of coffee at their Kings Cross branch before boarding the train.

  5. I have enjoyed quite a few breakfasts at “Le Pain Quotidien” in the Greenwich Village, NYC. My eldest daughter had a great apartment opposite Washington Square and we used to go to this bakery-café very often. Lovely food although it used to get a bit crowded, particularly on weekends.

    • I’ve been to the one in Greenwich Village. I quite like the one near Bryant Park as well.

  8. Deb, I guess Brisabne is next on the agenda for a Le Pain Quotiden as Sydney now have a few, including one I have visited at Westfield Bondi. I remember eating at the one in Rome with you a number of years ago. Your pictures of that favourite breakfast of yours look so delicious. Much better than two boiled eggs at home, why is that?

    • I had heard that Le Pain was coming to Australia, but I didn’t know it had happened. Thank you for letting me know. Let’s hope we get one in Brisbane soon.

  9. We had not even contemplated them when in Paris but once we were in Belgium we actually went in to a couple and had wonderful lunches, good value and quality. So next time we come across one in Paris we won’t hesitate. Thanks for the reminder.

    • I didn’t realize it was a chain when I went the first time. We just stumbled upon it on a freezing Paris morning and then discovered them in other places. I think the food and coffee is consistently good.

  11. Ok…I am now drooling and wishing so bad I was back in Paris. I LOVE these kinds of places. Oh, and the hazelnut spreads and freshly baked breads with the perfect amount of soft inside and hard crust on the outside.

  14. We’ve got one here in Sydney I think! I’ve never been though. I wonder what is the Noir spread? Like a dark chocolate version of their Noisella/Nutella. Or dare I say a version of Vegemite! 😛

    • The Noir is a dark chocolate spread, and is very good. You should try the one in Sydney. I hope they open in Brisbane.

  15. Oh (big sigh) don’t get me started on this place….I love it! I guess this is what landed you on my blog 2 years ago, when I posted pictures of the one in Washington DC area, they offer you there the 3 kind of chocolat spread to have with your order of bread…. last month I went to the one in Dubai Mall and next week I am going to the one in Manhattan close to the Rockefeller center.

  16. The owner of this ‘chain’ opened one in Toronto; in an ‘appropriate’ part of town to be successful. But it wasn’t. Visited there though when it was ‘alive’; almost more interested in the ambience, fixtures and drool worthy built-ins that brought us some European warmth. The communal table was most appealing. YOUR breakfast looked fabulous.

  18. OMG, those pictures have made me *ravenous*! I too wish we had such a bakery near us.

    I think I am going to make myself some soft-boiled eggs with fresh breadrolls and a pot of tea now… pity I don’t have any chocolate spread, that would go down really well right about now!

  19. I visited one of these chains in London last year. All I can say is de lish!!! Am off to London again in a week and you can be sure I will be having breakfast and posibly a lunch or dinner there as well. Oh! And yes if anyone is listening can we have one in Edinburgh please?
