Faces at the Carnevale in Viareggio 2012

I went to see the Carnevale in Viareggio on Sunday. Just like last year it was a mad affair with people dressed up, music, dancing in the streets and the most amazing floats. I will show you some of those in a while. I had a great time finding faces. Some are parts of floats, some participants in the parade, some are there to watch.

    • People go to a lot of trouble to dress up. It is not easy to get photos as the place is incredibly crowded and people are moving. I saw lots that I would have liked to photograph that I missed.

  4. Beautiful photos, Debra and they accurately show the people’s art and creativity. They have enjoyed these traditions since Roman times, when the festivals were called Saturnalia, or Baccanalia. Carnevale, or farewell to meat, which was banned in the past during the forty days preceding Easter (or Lenten period), was the last chance to have fun and even “debaucherie” prior to this very austere season in the calendar. The Church did not like it and had to “tolerate” it, hence all the references to religion. Viareggio’s Carnevale is worth a visit. I’m glad that you had such a great time.

But there is one of them, that is amazing, the man with orange hair, how absurd… Thank you dear Debra, how nice to have an image with your lovely face now, have a nice weekend, with my love, nia

  7. The Italians know how to use farce to a fine art – such cheeky, provocative and humorous pictures! You’ve captured the good, the bad and the ugly in all forms. Your photographs bring out the spirit of Carnevale. Love the gay atmosphere! The Geisha Girl is gorgeous and that Vulture looks rather ominous.

  15. Such wonderful caricatures — Sarcozy, the Pope, Obama, Berlusconi — so much like Carnaval, Halloween, Mardi Gras, and maybe a bit of New Years Eve. I wish Americans could be as adventurous, silly, creative, and fun loving at holidays.
